COVID-19 Q&A

Why would I need COVID-19 testing?

COVID-19 testing offered at Avenel Primary Care confirms whether you have a COVID infection. In-office testing is more accurate than an at-home, over-the-counter test.

COVID-19 is a viral infection. It spreads through respiratory droplets shared when a person speaks, coughs, or sneezes.

Most people recover fully from COVID and go on with their lives after some discomfort or inconvenience. It’s also possible to have an infection and not experience any symptoms.

The elderly, immunocompromised, and very young can develop serious symptoms and require hospitalization as a result.

By getting tested when you have symptoms or before traveling, you’re able to take the proper steps to isolate yourself, mask up, and prevent vulnerable populations from developing COVID-19.

What symptoms suggest I have COVID-19?

The symptoms of COVID-19 are much like those of other respiratory viruses. Suspect COVID-19 if you have:

  • Fever and chills
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Sore throat
  • Muscle aches
  • Chest pain and pressure
  • Persistent cough
  • Loss of smell and taste
  • Shortness of breath or other breathing difficulties

Your provider at Avenel Primary Care provides COVID-19 tests in the office to confirm your diagnosis. They can monitor you, provide recommendations for at-home care so you find relief from symptoms, and be on call if you experience worsening symptoms or respiratory distress.

What is a PCR COVID-19 test?

The PCR COVID-19 test is an accurate way to assess your infection. During the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, your provider collects a small sample of nasal fluid or saliva using a swab. They send the sample to the in-house lab and process it quickly to determine whether you have SARS-CoV-2.

The PCR test reveals whether you have the virus at the time of testing but doesn’t detect past infections. A COVID-19 antibody test can determine if you’ve had a past infection and possibly some level of immunity. An antibody test doesn’t tell you if you currently have a COVID-19 infection.

Your provider can help you determine what type of test is right for you, depending on your goals of testing and your symptoms.
